Cheerleader tryouts and cheerleading squads
Becoming a cheerleader or trying out for cheerleading squads can be a pretty complex process. Getting onto a good squad, whether it is a high school cheerleading squad or a college squad will be a challenge. With a large number of auditions and just a few openings each year the best approach is to be fully prepared with all aspects of the tryouts including preparations, presentation, dance routine and interview.
Following these tips may just give you the advantage you need to land that coveted opening on the squad.
In preparing for the cheerleader tryouts you will want to be sure of when the tryouts are scheduled and be on time, well rested and full of energy. Tryouts can last a few days in all so be prepared to be there as long as they may last. Talk to the officiate conducting the tryout to find out what type of dance you may be asked to perform, if there will be a freestyle portion and what other requirements may be involved.
To be sure you are fully prepared have several dance routines that you can use and watch the other people trying out to best choose which would give you the advantage.
Check out the squad before showing up to the tryouts to know what type of look they may be looking for. If the squad all tend to wear their hair up then you may wish to show up with your hair up. In most cases a squad will all have long hair so it is a good idea to not cut your hair short before a tryout.
Cheerleading is an athletic sport and therefore the look desired is that of a healthy athletic build…not too thin and not too stocky.
Select your clothing before the tryouts and remember to include an outfit for an interview. Avoid clothing that are too revealing and that fit well allowing you to have free movement. Additionally, try to wear the same colors through the entire tryout process to help the officiate better recognize you.
The dance skills you posses will be very important; therefore, be prepared with a kickline, freestyle and jazz dance routine. Be prepared to be able to kick over your head, do the splits and have high energy while maintaining poise. They may choose the music for your freestyle dance so be prepared to dance to the rhythm without being dependant on any particular song.
In your interview be articulate and prepare to talk about your history, why you would like to be on this squad. Practice your interview in front of the mirror and in front of friends and avoid looking cute; look professional.
Finally, in all areas of the tryouts remember to smile!
