Cheerleader teams and cheerleading coaches

Cheerleading is a team sport and like any sport there must be a coach.  Many cheerleading coaches are former cheerleaders who have experienced competition and or college level cheerleading and have aged out of performing with the squad.

These individuals have never lost their passion for cheerleading and desire to help other cheerleaders in their own pursuit.  The cheerleading coaches inspire their squad, teach cheers and stunts and help the squad improve to perform in competition and feel great about their performance.

A cheerleader team learns dance routines and stunts to root for their team, to entertain the fans at a game and often to perform in competition.  The cheerleading coach leads them on their way.  The coach will lead the team in cheer warm-ups and drills making sure that all team members are limber as well as strong and maintain the athletic build needed and expected in a cheerleading team.

The team can expect to practice nearly every day and learn gymnastic moves such as back handsprings, and complete tumbling routines.

Every state has its own cheerleader requirements for certification and no cheerleading coach should be allowed to coach a team in a competition without this certification.  Allowing a cheerleading coach who is uncertified to compete can pose a liability for the competition event, the school and the coach itself.  Besides state requirements for certification there are three major certification requirements for cheerleading coaches.

The American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA), the National Council for Spirit Safety and Education (NCSSE) and the U.S. All Star Federation are all programs that many states will accept.  First aid training is also a normal requirement for coaching and even if it is not a requirement it is a good idea as cheerleading accidents are common.

Cheerleading coaches have many resources available for them through online websites, books, videos, camps and other venues that provide skills, drills and tips for coaching a cheerleading team.
