Cheerleader cheers and cheerleading chants
Cheerleaders support their team, get the spectator involved and entertain while maintaining high energy and performing complex moves and routines. Cheerleading chants and cheerleader cheers are memorized and yelled in a coordinated manner through the course of a game often including a longer half time dance routine.
The cheerleading squad is a team sport and not just a cheering section for a football or basketball team.
So how does a cheerleading squad come up with all the chants and cheers they use and how do they keep their cheers fresh and current? There are a great number of resources a cheerleading team or coach can draw from. Many online websites have free chants and cheers that can be downloaded, memorized and worked out with specific moves to perform at games. The result of this will be cheer squads for various teams all shouting out the same cheers and chants.
Most squads want to be unique! Some squads may purchase cheers and chants from a professional cheer writer or a cheer choreographer. This can be costly for a school and therefore is not customarily used. There is no way to secure your unique chant or cheer after the first time you perform it either.
One of the more fun ways of coming up with your own cheer or chant is to make it up yourself. Changing some words to a well known song to fit the team you are rooting for is a fun way to come up with a unique cheer. No cost is involved and when other teams ‘steal’ your cheer you can feel honored and come up with another fun, fantastic, unique cheer.
Cheerleading chants are shorter, often have limited moves and are used to encourage the team during play. ‘We have spirit yes we do, we have spirit how ‘bout you’ is one well known and well used chant that is often yelled across the field or court to the opposing team and goes back and forth. Soon the spectators join in for a fun lively way to show your spirit, root for your team and add to a fun filled night at your favorite sport.
