An introduction to cheerleaders and cheerleading

1. Each year, more women are severely injured in cheerleading than athletes in any other sport (National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research).

2. A first year student of medicine named Jack Campbell, Minnesota became the first leader time in 1898. It took until World War II that women began to dominate cheerleading, because men were away at war.

3. In July 2004, the University of Maryland, became the first Division IA school to recognize competitive cheerleading as a sport and Varsity to the number of Title IX requirements.

Last year, a team of epidemiologists led by Dr. Barry Boden from the University of North Carolina analyzed 29 of the 39 catastrophic cheerleading injury reports. The majority of injuries (27 of 29) were female. Dr. Boden and his team discovered that the injury rate was five times higher than supporters from college cheerleaders in high school. Resulted in injuries most frequently pyramid formations and basket throws.

Cheerleading is a team sport! You are responsible for “Getting the crowd up!” You perform, inspire you, you make people think, “how did she do that?

Cheerleading has been around since the late 1800s in America and is bigger and better than ever today.

Some of the most amazing routines that I never seen were either football or basketball games and you withdrew from the event by saying: “How could they on earth pull out” Not just the cheerleaders usually very beautiful, but they are also smart too!

Did you know that most cheerleaders wear a “B” average in high school and college – in fact, 83% of them! 81% of cheerleaders are age 14-18 years of age. 62% of them are also involved in another sport besides cheerleading.

The next time you watch the cheerleaders in “fear” you’re sitting in the stands or supports, remember the statistics mentioned above. They are not only beautiful, but they are students smart too!
