Sandite cheerleaders and cheerleading history

Cheerleading originated in the United States in the late 1880s with a crowd yelling and chanting for the team they wish to encourage.

Though it is not documented and cannot be proven it is widely credited to Princeton University in 1884 for coming up with a Princeton cheer and making cheerleading history.

Cheering was then brought to the University of Minnesota a few years later by Princeton graduate Tom Peebles and where Johnny Campbell made cheerleading history in 1898. Minnesota was having such a horrible football season that people felt a need to offer the team positive chants and cheering was born.

A male cheerleading squad was organized in 1903 and it was not until 1920s that woman became much more involved in the cheerleading with gymnastics, pyramids, throws and stunts being incorporated.

In the 1930s the sport of cheerleading developed into a display of showmanship as they became more entertaining and fascinating to watch. The megaphone became the next big addition in the early 1900s but it was the introduction of the pom pom by Lawrence Herkimer that really offered a symbol for cheerleading.

Herkimer has often been thought to be the grandfather of cheerleading with the introduction of pom pom as well as the founding of the National Cheerleading Association. Today the sport of cheerleading has evolved into a competitive sport for males and females to display incredible talent.

Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, Oklahoma builds upon the cheerleading history with the Sandite Cheerleading team in performing and competing with skill and talent. CPHS Sandites continue to compete in local and national level cheerleading competitions making the one and only public high school in Sand Springs, Oklahoma a proud beacon.
